Born To Curate

The event, BORN TO CURATE, is a live curatorial battle that pits four teams of Los Angeles-based curators head to head in a fast-paced game of wit and knowledge. Structured like a game show, teams have two minutes to conceptualize a curatorial project or exhibition in response to a theme picked at random. Inverting the largely private curatorial process into a public event, ideas behind the construction of meaning are infused with open response and humor. Winners are determined by an applause meter and receive the coveted Born to Curate trophy.

Each team of curators is comprised of two people. There are four elimination rounds and then a final championship round to determine the overall winners. The game is serious but also very fun at the same time. In previous events, some of the teams answered with real and academic statements about art and curating, while others tried to tease the public with humor. The entire event lasts a little over an hour, followed by a reception.

LA PARTICIPANTS
Master of Ceremonies :
Mario Ybarra Jr. (b. 1973, Los Angeles, CA) Ybarra Jr. earned his MFA from the University of California, Irvine, CA. He has exhibited internationally in Zurich, New York, Chicago, Torino, San Francisco, Los Angeles, and Miami. Ybarra Jr. has been included in exhibitions and biennials such as “Phantom Sightings : Art After the Chicano Movement” at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, CA (2008) ; the 2008 Whitney Biennial, New York, NY ; "Invisible Cities", curated by Kris Kuramitsu and Christopher Miles, Madrid, Spain (2010). The artist's recent solo exhibitions include “Silver and Blacks” at Michael Janssen Gallery, Berlin, Germany (2010) ; a solo exhibition at Cardi Black Box, Milan, Italy (2011) ; and a solo exhibition at The Santa Barbara Contemporary Arts Forum (2012). Ybarra Jr.'s work can be found in the collection of the Eilene and Peter Norton Foundation, el Museo Salinas Collection, Mexico and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Los Angeles, CA. Mario Ybarra Jr. lives and works in Los Angeles, CA.

Curator Teams :
Jarret Gregory & Patrick Steffen
Jarrett Gregory is an assistant curator at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art and a former assistant curator at the New Museum in New York. From 2005, Gregory worked with the chief curator at the Whitney Museum. Gregory has written for the MIT List Visual Arts Center ; the Exhibitionist journal ; the New Museum ; the Whitney Museum ; and the Los Angeles Museum of Contemporary Art.

Patrick Steffen was born in 1976 in Switzerland. He currently lives and works in Los Angeles. He's Flash Art LA Editor.

Mark Allen & Chris Kallmyer
Mark Allen is an artist, educator and curator based in Los Angeles and the founder and executive director of Machine Project. Under his direction machine has produced over 500 events, workshops and installations. Prior to opening Machine, he was involved with several alternative arts groups as a curator, board member and director, and co-founded the Los Angeles new media collective c-level. He has taught at the California Institute of the Arts and the University of California San Diego, and is currently an Associate Professor of Art at Pomona College. He serves on the Board of Directors of the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts in New York, and served for three years as a member of the Artist Advisory Board of the Hammer Museum in Los Angeles. Mark received his MFA from the California Institute of the Arts, following a residency with the Core Fellowshipof the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston.

Chris Kallmyer is an artist living in Los Angeles, CA who makes sound with everyday objects to explore the processes, customs, and environments through which humans have altered landscape and place. He has presented work at the Walker Art Center, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA), the Museum of Contemporary Art Denver, the Hammer Museum, the Getty Center, REDCAT, Machine Project, and other spaces in America and Europe. Chris is an artist that collaborates frequently with Machine Project, is a member of wild Up, and earned his MFA in music from the California Institute of the Arts. In 2012 Chris was an Artist in Residence at the Headlands Center for the Arts.

For the London version, participants included Coline Milliard, Gabriel Menotti, Richard Wentworth, Matthieu Copeland, Anca Rujoiu and Snejana Krasteva. In Paris, the curators were Isabelle Le Normand, Florence Ostende, Damien Airault.
